Casa Lleo

Near the monastery of Valldemossa, Casa Lleó nests on the hillside. Its walls were entrusted to Eddy Dankers, an artisan painter whose work transforms surfaces into living, breathing elements of a space. Descended from a long line of painters, Dankers’ mastery has been sought by the Royal Family of Belgium and by Axel Vervoordt, whose interiors carry his depth and soul. In this project each surface, walls, doors, cabinets, bears his quiet signature of refinement.

The furniture is edited, masculine- Brazilian modern classics with their architectural poise and tactile sensuality in dialogue with tailored walnut pieces. As avid entertainers and a family home, spaces for gathering were highly considered while conceptualizing the design. Infused with a subdued elegance, the open space melts together a range of vintage and contemporary designs, from an LA’s Stephen Kenns sofa to carefully curated archival mid century finds, a bold dining room table in solid Pequi wood and a New York Apparatus pendant “Arrow” that breaks the rigidness of the cement kitchen island. The cinema room had a basement feel that was softened by a huge pile of cushions made from Indigo dyed rugs and lit by a collection of organic-shaped lamps made in collaboration with local ceramicist Dora Good.

The palette draws from the surroundings, blues echoing shadowed pools, the sea, the sky. Sage greens pulled from the silvered olive groves beyond the windows; a rare thread of deep purple, like ripe skin of figs leans opulently on the bed. We hand dyed all the textiles in the house with natural pigments- the inbuilt sofas, the linen, the canopy for their daughter’s room. The palette isn’t something we imposed. It came with the view. We just found places for it to land, letting the tones work their way into the stone and lime until they stopped feeling like colour and started feeling like the house
